Symptoms

My hand is numb or tingling, especially at night or when using the phone

The thumb, index and middle fingers go numb or tingly, especially while you sleep, hold a phone, grip a steering wheel or use a mouse. You shake the hand to "wake it up". Grip is starting to feel weaker.

What this could mean

Classic symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, the median nerve being compressed at the wrist. Early carpal tunnel responds excellently to conservative treatment; left alone it can progress to permanent thumb weakness and muscle wasting that only surgery reverses.

What to do next

See a hand therapist (a specialised OT) for a conservative treatment package: custom night splint to keep the wrist neutral, tendon- and nerve-gliding exercises, activity modification for phone and computer use, and ergonomic review of your workstation. If symptoms persist 6 weeks, ask for a referral to an orthopaedic hand surgeon for nerve conduction testing.
